There is no short answer to this unfortunately. There are benefits such as the ability to apply for a VAT refund on expenditure and creating a perception of credbility, but there are also downsides that could affect cashflow and increase admin. For a more in-depth response, please click on the blog tab to see an article which deals with this thorny issue in more depth.

  • When I lived in the UK, we had to keep records for tax purposes, do I need to keep records in the UAE even though I do not earn enough to be liable for VAT?"
We're accountants, we like proper records! Currently the FTA regulations on UAE VAT state that you CAN register for VAT if your business earns in excess of AED 185,000 per annum and MUST register if you business earns in excess of AED 370,000 per annum. However, if you don't keep records how will you ever know when you reach or are approaching these thresholds? For us, it makes sense and allows you to make good business decisions when you know exactly how your operation is performing. Also, it is a common misconception that in the UAE that you do not have to keep records. To an extent this is true, but if the FTA ever wanted to investigate your business and determine your business income, you can be fined up to AED 10,000 for failure to provide proper records. Modern accounting software is relatively cheap, and easy to use. Get in touch, and we can help you decide which one is best for you, and get those records in order...
  • Do I need an accounting system, I’ve been looking at them, and they look pretty complicated, what benefits do they bring, and how much do they cost?"
Nowadays, you do not need to be a trained accountant to be able to manage your own accounts. There are many different systems out there with various pros and cons (look out for a blog coming soon on this subject...) but they all pretty much cover the basics. We prefer to use Xero, but currently work with other packages such as quickbooks, zoho, sage, and others. Costs can vary from $20 per month upwards depending on the complexity of the system you need, and the amount of users you have. These packages, can automate quotes, issue invoices, and many other things, so they provide a useful function over and above the traditional accounting role. If it all looks a bit bewildering to start with, give us a call, and we can advise on the best one for you, and help you with the inititial set up and training to get you up and running.
  • We are an online retailer, are there systems that do more than just bookkeeping, and can I use them for my stock management and inventory?"
